Defects in the spotlight: DECKS!
‘Don’t forget the deck’
Collapsing decking and balconies.
Statistics show that more decks and balconies collapse in the summer than during the rest of the year combined. With BBQ and party season just around the corner, it’s a good idea to make sure your decking is in good order for the summer.
"Balconies are usually used by a small family group of three to four people, however, when fifteen to twenty adults or more gather on a balcony the stress on the structure often reaches breaking point and the balcony collapses causing serious injury. The danger is heightened when these balconies or decks are several metres off the ground.” Christian Cordony – Managing Director and Building Consultant.
Homeowners should inspect their decks and balconies often and should also consider a professional deck safety inspection in order to make sure their deck and balcony is safe for family, friends and events.
What to look out for?
Rotting timbers, split and decaying wood – including any termite damage.
Rusty nails, bolts and corroded brackets.
Movement it stairs, handrails and balustrades.
Rust stains and cracking in concrete balconies.
If you notice any of these signs, then it is a good idea to get a professional inspection. We will provide you with a report outlining any serious issues to be addressed, as well as minor defects that could lead to more serious issues in the future.
The number of balcony and deck collapses have increased in the last few years, highlighting the need for homeowners to have regular checks in the safety of their outside structures and areas.
